Abraham Neufeld °1984
At the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp Neufeld could develop himself in a short time to a high level of classical skills.
Fred Bervoets encouraged him to believe in his art and to open the ways to express the truth behind the daily masks. He supported him in revealing the magic of all things behind its realistic appearance. Due to the port of Antwerp, industrial scenes and urban landscapes were introduced in his work. Today it feels for him as if the city of Antwerp is his artistic place of birth.
After his study he went to Vienna. In Austria he met a sublime climate of old and new styles, of old and new values and al lot of old and young people that inspired him.
Neufeld was deeply inspired by human relations, and the patterns in wich their lives unfold. Reading Rilke he was touched by the following quote: “Once the realization is accepted that even between the closest human beings infinite distances continue, a wonderful living side by side can grow, if they succeed in loving the distance between them which makes it possible for each to see the other whole against the sky.”
We start as strangers to one and another. In his work he tries to built a bridge between the inside of the viewer and the intensions of the work.
Although there are distances, we can reach and meet the other in some seconds of time... Our deepest wish is to find deep unity between each other, and by taking care for how we feel and what we feel, we can open the door to that state of awareness.
“The only journey is the one within.” (Rainer Maria Rilke)
After Vienna he went to France, Germany and the USA. He was In New York, Philadelphia and Washington. The american society is one with a lot af differences between people. Neufeld made a serie on the life over there, and was deeply touched by the circumstances in which a lot of people have to survive.
Neufeld works in collections. One collection he calls an album; like in music. For him in every album a movie is shown in multi-layerd stills. After his return to Belgium he rented an atelier in Antwerp. With a universe full of images, a lot of sketches and photographes, he started making his ‘albums’ on canvas. He choose to combine all he had experienced in a very personal language.
His studio is the most intimate place for an artist. So for Neufeld. He explaines: ‘When i go into that workspace, i step out of a world of impossibilities, to breath myself into a universe of
endless creativity’ The most of the time the artist works alone. To concentrate himself and to focus on the deepest frequency of the artistic creation.
Being an artist is like a lot of other jobs: a hard one. To work, work, to work, day and night to get the intended results. Although people sometimes believe that it is a romantic life being an artist, reality tells that it is totally the opposite.
Artists bring beauty and orientation to the world. That’s their task. Beauty directly influences the quality and joy of life. When you come home and your work of art welcomes you, your intimate life starts. A life filled with endless creativity and in the best case with overwhelming peace.
Neufelds’ main goal is to create the image of beauty in the new century. Daily investigation and experiments bring him closer and closer to that point.
